Cadet Training Process
It is mandatory for all our cadets to follow a structured programme of practical on board training to gain experience necessary to become a competent Officer. The Cadet Training Record Book assists in this purpose. The Master/Chief Engineer inspect the record book on a monthly basis, in addition to the weekly inspections by the designated training officer. Comments are recorded as appropriate on completion of tasks and routine inspection of the record book.
Cadets are issued with a watch keeping certificate on completion of their tenure/tour of duty. As per the STCW regulations, he/she must have performed a minimum of six months watch keeping duties in the Engine Room / Bridge as appropriate under supervision of Master/Chief Engineer or a qualified officer. In cases of Engineer Cadets, an additional propelling time certificate may be required for certain nationalities.
Most of the V.Ships cadets are enrolled in shore based distance learning programs while serving on board that provides them with a perfect combination of academic knowledge & practical training on a ship
Cadets receive regular Appraisal Report as per our company procedures. The Appraisal Report is important for their personal development and also demonstrates that they are ready for promotion to Junior Officer. The report is always discussed in detail with them. A copy of the report is also given to the Cadet.
In order to further innovate the appraisal process, all our cadets are given a blank copy of the Appraisal Report at the start of their tour of duty, so they can be aware of what areas of their performance they will be judged and they have the opportunity to modify their behavior accordingly.
In circumstances where the Cadet possesses certification for an Officer of Watch, in addition to the promotion criteria as per our safety management system, the Group Training Department encourages the Master / Chief Engineer to promote certified Cadets on board their ship or recommend them for promotion on their next vessel.
Our policy is that no Cadet should be demoted to a rating position, (Ordinary Seaman, Wiper etc.) The Cadet Training Programme is for the development of Officers and not ratings.
