Cadet Training Program Overview

As a V.Ships Cadet you will completes a comprehensive training program over 4 years. Please download a training brochure here

We attach prime importance to the development of the skills, knowledge and experience needed by cadets to be future officers through planned and progressive training during the periods of sea-going service.

The program alternates periods of sea service on different type of vessels and shore-based studies.

During the period of intensive training undertaken by our cadets and trainees, we ensure that time spent during their shipboard period of training is utilised as productively as possible to gain the maximum experience relevant to their qualifying rank.

Every Cadet will complete the following training aspects:
  • Given a good understanding of the work expected from him/her while on board. As a directive we consider it imperative that any work delegated to our Cadets is purely for on-the-job training and is always carried out under the direct supervision of the officer responsible.
  • Our cadets do not work excessive hours or used as a “pair of extra hands” onboard. Any work that is given to them is always within their capabilities. Their work, watch schedule and study period is planned in such a manner so as to fully comply with the rest hours regulations.
  • We endeavour to assist our Cadets to obtain understanding of various Company policies and assist them by providing some form of sponsorship during their training stages
  • We pay special attention to train the cadet in all aspects of the duties of junior officer, arrange a routine, which gives him/her experience in watch keeping and general practical work.
  • Our Cadets participate & train for at least eight (8) hours each normal working day in the operation and maintenance of the vessel.
  • In addition, they cadets are given sufficient time off work & during weekends for the completion of any academic work required by his/her College/Academy. However, if the Cadet is certified, then this time is dedicated towards learning Bridge/Engine/Cargo operations duties as applicable.
