Project Engineer/Designer

UMC is a member of the V.Group; the world's leading marine services provider. UMC specialise in the provision of diving, engineering services and products that allow a vessel's underwater hull and associated appendages to be inspected, maintained, repaired and replaced afloat. Underwater engineering reduces the need to dry dock, allowing vessels to remain at sea, earning and operating.

UMC has a requirement for a Project Engineer to join their busy design & consultancy division working on a range of underwater development projects.

KEY REQUIREMENTS OF THE ROLE:

The successful candidate must possess an HNC/Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture. In addition, you will have Autocad 2007 or later experience, also use of 3D modelling with Autodesk Inventor Series would be advantageous.

Experience using FEA packages, such as Strand 7 and experience using MathCad would be beneficial.

A background in marine or defence related engineering is required with particular emphasis on design of ship related equipment for maintenance and repair. UMC also provide underwater solutions for some offshore and wind farm related projects together with dry dock gate and caisson repairs.

Project Management skills are a pre requisite which will lead to involvement with projects from the concept stage and following them through to attend any related on-site activities. The ability to work on their own or part of a team is essential and travel within the UK and overseas will be required. If a particular task requires working on-site or overseas for an extended period a living away allowance and overtime package is available.

Design work will entail knowledge of structures, fabrication, materials, hydraulics, pneumatics and general engineering principles.
Innovation and the ability to produce original solutions underpinned by our vast experience in the marine and specifically underwater industry is something UMC prides itself on.

A percentage of work UMC are involved with, relates to the RN and MoD, therefore experience in these areas would be very beneficial. Knowledge of Ministry Standards and Codes of Practice, also the working environment on naval vessels, would be an advantage with this element of our work.

Successful candidates will have to be or become UK security cleared.

Work in the Design and Consultancy Division can be varied and also may on occasion require working extended hours to support tight programmes in the shipping industry. As with any small to medium size company the need to be flexible and be willing to help others is essential.
